Leila Abdul-Rauf - Phantasiai LP (Cloister Recordings: 170thCycleLP)

4th full length opus from California's genius multi-instrumentalist Leila Abdul-Rauf. "Phantasiai", in Hellenistic philosophy, are our impressions, the ways in which the world is represented through our senses, preceding actual thoughts. This is where music-making lies; in the space between senses and thoughts, having the power to express where words fall short. This new album is comprised of two suites, each containing four movements, composed almost entirely from modulated live trumpet, glockenspiel, and vocal performance, an album which Leila believes to be the coldest and most sinister she's released under her name to date. The first suite, “Distortions in Phantasy,” describes a character being seduced and consumed by a powerfully addictive phantasy, one so destructive, the body, mind and spirit are annihilated beyond recognition. As the album moves between tracks I through IV, listeners may experience a gradual sensation of sinking deeper into an abyss. In the second suite, “The I Emerges,” the character experiences a renewal in which what little is left of the former self is vaporized through a crucible of sorts, then reorganized into a new physical and spiritual existence. The pain of the loss experienced by the former self is gone, but adjusting to the new self is an uncomfortable and disorienting experience, with reality perpetually coming into question." Weaving layered textures into drifting cinematic compositions, Leila conjures dream-like ambient hymns while channeling ethereal melancholy. Toy Bizarre - kdi dctb 180 10inch (Drone: Sub-22)

"A stellar year continues for Cedric Peyronnet (toy bizarre) on our site, as he continues to score reviews through careful attention to detail and drama. kdi dctb 180 is yet another in a run of compelling sound works, this one available on clear 10″ vinyl as part of Drone Records’ Substantia Innominata series. While this means that the release is shorter than usual, these tracks benefit from their relatively compact nature. The series’ stated theme is that of “the unknown”, and Peyronnet writes in response, “There is a path deep in the woods, where, as a child, I used to run – walking was really too frightening there. Spent a lot of time there, trying to track down the essence of the place, trying to catch the unknown.” He recently returned there to make this recording (which we assume was not done while running). The opening minutes capture this sense of impending danger, of movement in the woods and unidentifiable cries. At first we only hear a drain pipe, but then advancing drones and metallic rubs provide an impression of predatory creatures. But something changes midway, and one can clearly identify the dividing line in the Soundcloud map below. The music stops, giving way to the sound of pure flowing water. The nightmares have been dispelled, and finally the artist is free to walk, not run, even to sit for a while. Even as water is added unto water, a sense of safety remains. The second side takes similar turns, beginning with the crunch of underbrush ~ we can hear his clear footsteps laid atop a bed of what may be cicadas and mourning doves. Darker whirls enter midway, as if to say, “we’re not done with you yet, Peyronnet.” But the trick is on them, as the artist is in control this time. He’s the one in the studio, taming the tones. If the sounds remain frightening at this point, it’s only by his design. By flipping fear on its head, the artist has produced a triumphant document, a sonic flashlight in the woods. This psychological portrayal of occultism and inquisition combined a critical perspective on religion and patriarchy with stunning visions of possession, sabbath rituals, torture, and demons. In celebration of this 100th anniversary, German ritual formation VORTEX has developed a brooding, percussive and complex musical work evoking hidden energies and abyssal spirituality. Having dealt with Vorticism (ROCKDRILL), ancient mythology (KALI YUGA, MOLOCH, AS GODS FALL) and solar rituals (HELIOZ) before, HÄXAN represents an epic new level for VORTEX's energetic ritual sound, based on drones, gongs, throat singing, percussion, strings, guitars, horns, and processed field recordings. Both Vinyl and the accompanying CD included in this set contain completely different mixes of two main compositions: The vinyl mix is a dynamic, drone guitar driven post-industrial collage, while the CD reduces this approach to its dark ambient core. Both versions are apocalyptic soundtracks in their own right and are intended for rituals, meditation and a deep listening experience. For the recording of HÄXAN Vortex founder Marcus Stiglegger teamed up with Oliver Freund (of MARS and Vinur), who also supports the live rituals of the band.
