Right on time for the third Epicurean Escapism Festival, The Epicurean & Silken Tofu release another compilation, which is not a mere reissue of the previous Epicurean Escapism I tape/DVDr set released in 2012, but comes with new & exclusive tracks by IRM, Krank, JARL as well as a collaboration track by Human Larvae & Anemone Tube. Apart from this, the set includes a DVD with collected video works by IRM mastermind Martin Bladh and a 24-page catalogue with essays and artwork by the same artist. Swedish industrial trio IRM provide an episodic track constructed with elements from “Indications of Nigredo”, “Order4” and their new album “Closure” unified into a new, holistic composition, which contrasts aggressive noise segments with the illusionary moments of almost folkish lavishness. The track by John Murphy’s lately revived project KRANK is a dark collage of fragmented noise, acoustic samples and female vocals all intermingled in a vortex of sonic chaos. IRM member JARL contributes a subtle piece of circulating drone sound, whose tranquil surface makes the half hidden harshness beneath even more audible. Anemone Tube and Human Larvae contribute a quite lucid piece that perfectly combines the qualities of both projects – the knock-on effect of Anemone Tube’s flow of sounds melts with the heaviness of Human Larvae’s doom-like industrial. The 92 minute DVD by Martin Bladh includes his earliest short film “Pig and Tomboy”(2005), the epic pentalogy “Cycle” (2006) and the conceptual installation video “DES“ (2009) among others. All the films present unvarnished set pieces of the human body subjected to subtly implied violence within claustrophobic spaces, where the camera itself, the voyeuristic eye, is the only free player. Velehentor - From the Gloom of Graves/Stonewells of Aeternity CD (Abgvrd: Smersh02)

Other project of Anton Sheforostov of Closing the Eternity fame that's full of hopelessness and dread - but of course, you'd probably expect that based on the title. Down tempo and depressed washes of solemn and murky electronic soundscapes that move slowly through a foggy haze, with touches of dark ritualism. Gloom is the operative word here and feelings of emptiness and and despair run rampant throughout. New Lithuanian project that made quite an impression here at headquarters. 7 tracks of mildly abrasive sonic desolation, falling somewhere between the blackened atmospheric stylings of Navicon and the cold grip of something Scandinavian - perhaps the more minimal side of Nordvargr or the darker side of Moljebka Pvlse; A sooted, rusting spiritual landscape where hopelessness is immense and despair is imminent. Verdant - Sincerity (Existest: XVII)

Verdant is Zach Adams, who is also the man behind BKPR, the esoteric and obtuse harsh noise project of relative obscurity. I can see why Egan of Xiphoid Dementia liked and released this - like his own work, this defies categorization, and expertly navigates it's way through a massive array of sounds, from the violent and brutish, to the more surreal and emotive, utilizing samples, spoken word, insanely intense vocals, and a ton of other noises and textures. A really complex arrangement here, which at it's most basic level, would probably be defined as power electronics, but that's a simplification of what Verdant creates. Vhril - Vortex Psysynthesis CD (Old Captain: OCCD023)

n the name of Ulex, in loving memory of John, here comes Vhril! Vhril began life as Ulex Xane's (Streicher, Zero Cabal fame) own solo project in 1991. He and John Murphy (rip) had been friends since the early 1980's and had long wanted to do some duo recordings together contributing to each other's projects on several occasions and playing live together. John became interested in the Vhril concept when Ulex had told him about its occult associations exploring Thulean esoteric paths and Vril energies in a ritual setting. Together they would record material during extended sessions/meditations and assemble it into specific tracks later: John often brought tapes of material he'd recorded elsewhere to be used as a basis to add other sounds in Ulex's studio. Later on when John went up to Sydney again he took the Vhril idea with him and morphed it into his Shining Vril project (but that's another story, folks). In the vein of Ain Soph or Zero Kama, the present "Vortex Psysynthesis" record, originally released via Zero Cabal in 1992 as a limited tape, commemorates the dawn of early sparse and minimal ritual style music, using John's tapes, bells and percussion and Ulex's field recordings, clay percussion and electronics.
