Hadewych - Welving CD (SOLD OUT) (Malignant: TumorCD115)

Though the project of Dutchman Peter Johan Nÿland, contributions from members of Trepaneringsritualen, Dead Neanderthals, Turia and veteran experimental vocalist Greetje Bijma, help Hadewych to function more as a collective as it amorphously shapeshifts and navigates through a broad swath of styles. And yet, Welving is so finely honed and skillfully crafted, that it works as a singular,whole, never losing a firm grasp on what remains at the core of its unique and dynamic sound. Still, it is nearly impossible to classify or define, utilizing a broad array of instrumentation, working in the monolithic, organic and the acoustic, and filtering it through a complex network of darkened, post-industrial, post-black, ritual hallucinations, and noir-ish Bohren And Der Club Of Gore deathjazz, with a steady stream of insistent bass, percussion, and spoken narrative to propel many of the tracks forward. Hadewych defines their music as black rituals channeling the ultra-grotesque, which is about an apt description as you're going to find, and yet it's that vagueness and ambiguity that manages to sum them up perfectly. One of the most unique and exceptional releases under the Malignant banner, and highly recommended for those unafraid to venture into realms unknown. Herukrat - Songs of Religious Devotion CD (Found Remains: Found17)

Herukrat is the solo project of Jackson Abdul-Salaam, a revered figure in the noise scene who has been active since 2013 with his last album released earlier this year on Berlin’s Total Black label. The project’s roots sprang from harsh noise and feedback bludgeoning but has since been reborn as a brooding power electronics entity exploring violence, war, and spirituality. It’s the latter on which Herukrat has based this newest release and he has provided a statement on its genesis. "Songs of Religious Devotion moves away from any external themes and influences and goes right to the core of my project. I started recording for this album, which was originally going to be a four track EP, while finishing the Darkness Over Najaf LP. Working so extensively on the idea of war in the Middle East on the last major Herukrat project, I wanted to shift my focus to the other theme that is always the most important undercurrent of Herukrat - my own religious and spiritual life. This album is essentially a celebration of my relationship with The Almighty and what it took for me to get there, and although I use the term "celebration," this album doesn't come across with overwhelming sounds of joy. In this case I've tried to dig deep and lay out the sound that represents true "spiritual devotion" to me, and the result is some of the darkest and most somber material I have recorded to date. For me, there is always a side to spiritual devotion that is heavy and mournful, and that is the primary sound that towers over this material. Himukalt was born from the obsession, addiction, and the impure thoughts of American noise artist Ester Kärkkäinen. Her impulse for self-destruction, co-mingles with self-discovery, as she confesses broken tales about sex work, manic-depression, social anxiety, dysphoria and psychic parasites. All finally leaving us to languor in her suicidal ideation and conflicted desire to be very, very alone. She swaddles those appropriations from her life and those around her in the aestheticized violence of power electronics and a death-industrial negativity, similar to that of Lille Roger, Atrax Morgue, and Master/Slave Relationship. If facets from Kärkkäinen’s earlier albums gave you a glimpse of seeing the world of sex workers, Dreaming Of A Dead Girl lets you inside to feel their world. Clandestine, this is a door you close behind you. Through torment and despair, in darkness, a finality dissolves through hope. Metallic fluttering and empty thuds of disregarded heartbeats transmute sounds at times more substantive than the soiled words you are hearing.
